The Fool - Why It's Not Always a Fresh Start

The Standard Interpretation (And Why I'm Suspicious)

The Fool. The start of the journey. The beginning of the cycle. The one with no number or the number zero - depending on who you ask.

Usually, when people pull The Fool, the interpretation they get (especially online) is something like: "You're on the edge of a bright new path. You're carefree and courageous. You're about to leap forward into a fresh start. A new chapter is beginning and you are READY."

I mean ... maybe. But honestly, I'm a little wary of this card. Not because it's bad - there are no bad cards - but because the image of The Fool often gets over-simplified. Too much influencer, not enough nuance.

So, let's take a step back and look a little deeper.

The Lighter Side: Bold, Brave, and a Bit Carefree

Let's start with the optimistic reading. In this version, The Fool is a clean slate, a fresh start, an adventurous spirit. It might show up when you're about to do something new - start a job, move cities, sign up for pottery with zero idea what a kiln is. It invites curiosity and courage. It tells you not to worry too much about what lies ahead.

The white rose in The Fool's hand suggests purity of intention. Stop and smell the roses. Enjoy the journey for its own sake. The little dog jumping at their heels might be a loyal companion, a reminder that you're not as alone as you think. And the bag over the shoulder? Well, there's some wisdom packed in there, whether you realize it or not.

So yeah. Sometimes, The Fool is a true beginning.

The Challenging Side: Uncalculated Risk and Delusional Optimism

But.

What if it's not? What if The Fool isn't starting out naive and wide-eyed, but choosing to pretend they are?

What if the person in the card - not looking where they're stepping - is foolishly (or worse, willfully) taking unnecessary risks? What if they're ignoring facts? Or walking away from responsibility and calling it freedom?

That little dog? Could be a warning. Could be trying to stop you from stepping off the metaphorical cliff into something that looks like liberation but is actually just chaos with a pretty filter.

Sometimes The Fool is trying to run from consequences with a big grin and a backpack full of avoidance.

The Symbols: Dog, Rose, and the Bag of Unknowns

The Fool's imagery is simple but loaded. A few symbols worth considering:

  • The Dog: Loyalty, yes, but also instinct. Encouragement and excitement, but also that part of you that knows something's off, even if you can't name it.

  • The White Rose: A reminder to enjoy the journey for its own sake, but also a memory of the past that you might need to let go of, in order to grab the next thing along the way.

  • The Bag: Often read as hidden knowledge or untapped potential. But sometimes we don't want to look in the bag because we're afraid of what's already in there.

If you get stuck on a Major Arcana card, try reading it as a moment in time rather than a fixed identity.

In Context: The Fool in a Spread

Let's do what we always do here at Not a Cult (Yet): build a mini spread. Two random cards, three random positions:

  • Position 9 - Hope / Fear - The Fool

  • Position 6 - Personal Power - The Emperor

  • Position 4 - Passing Out of Focus - Ace of Cups

We have The Fool in our Hopes and Fears spot. We hope that the bold new steps will take us on a daring new journey - but we also fear they might walk us straight off a cliff.

So, we pull The Emperor in the Personal Power spot, reminding us: planning is our superpower. Maybe we're underestimating just how prepared we actually are.

And to round it off, we pull the Ace of Cups in the Passing Out of Focus position. The wave of new emotion is fading - not because it didn't matter, but because it's been integrated. We're not acting on impulse anymore. We're stepping forward with clarity.

So, Should You Be Worried?

Not really. But maybe be a little bit more awake.

The Fool isn't good or bad. It just is. It can be fresh or reckless, brave or blind. That's why it's card zero; anything can come next.

If you pull this card and feel unsure, you're not doing it wrong. You're probably doing it exactly right. Make sure you're taking your next bold step in life for the right reasons.

And drink some water, you're not a cactus.
